ASSOCIAÇÃO AMAW – MADEIRA ANIMAL WELFARE

PURPOSE AND MISSION

Founded in January 2012 the Associação AMAW – MADEIRA ANIMAL WELFARE, a non-profit zoophile association that aims to control the reproduction of abandoned canines and felines, stray, institutionalized and with special needs in Madeira, as well as collaborate with public and private entities to promote health and animal welfare.

Our aim is to cater for animals with special needs those whose owners or holders have proven lack of financial resources, people unemployed, socially excluded who live under poverty level with little or any financial resource, who are physically and or mentally disabled, blind or who are in nursing homes, institutions of social solidarity, correctional and educational or others that AMAW consider the need of support.

All animals are identified with “microchip”, registered in a database and receive a free anti-rabies vaccine. All feline are left ear marked.

It is very gratifying to see the high number of abandoned pets that after sterilization are removed from the street and adopted by responsible families which reinforces the importance of our work and our mission.

In 6 years we have already spayed/neutered for free 5.402 animals. Over 43% were stray pets adopted after spay/neuter and have new homes now.

Due to the importance of our work on the 16th November 2017, the Government of Madeira officially declared AMAW of Public Utility (non-profit animal charity).

AMAW receives no government funding and depends entirely on the generosity of our supporters, all donations are important, regardless of their value, without them, we would not be able to care for so many animals. But it is vital to find permanent support on a regular basis for achieving a sustainable medium-term action plan.

Our Mission:

To control the reproduction of abandoned canines and felines, stray, institutionalized and with special needs in Madeira.

Goals to support our mission:

We are a free spay/neuter institution

We want to avoid healthy animal’s euthanasia

We want to avoid unwanted and uncontrolled pregnancies

We want to avoid shelter intake and animal captivity

We want to keep as many animals as possible out of the shelter system

We want to reduce dramatically the number of stray and homeless animals

We promote adoption and rehoming of free rambling animals

Our slogan: Neutering for life. Bring us a stray and we spay.

Our Strategy

Our free spay / neuter program applies to stray cats and dogs and pets with special needs.

We deal a lot with homeless and poor people who are incredible good companion animals caregivers. They need a strong support.

Our vision extends far way to the local organizations and create groups of volunteers in every parish to trap animals and return them after neuter. We want a great involvement of different levels of the community working together. The TNR programs greatly depend on them.

We hope our project becomes a modular example.

We want to change the minds and attitudes of people and the well-being status of animals. We want to increase more compassion for animals.

Animal welfare is directly linked with human welfare. The state of animals on any country or home is a direct reflection of its humans. Reducing the stray animal population also helps to alleviate the pressure on the poor people who are usually the ones feeding them.

This is not a dream, it´s a difficult task but not impossible.

Every day is a spay day.

WE NEED STRONG SUPPORT AND FUNDS TO SUSTAIN OUR MISSION FOR MANY YEARS.

If you believe this project is important, please help any way you can.

Kind regards

Eduardo Teixeira
